Day2 Day out but did cook

Today I spent my day out but I did wake up early and made breakfast. I made typical French toast!! We Indians take great pride in inventing our own food, but this one is a special one. Though most of us think that this dish was invented by Indians and is found only in India, we really dont know why its called French by the way.So I did a little research on the subject.
French toast, that bit of gastronomical yumminess that is fried egg/bread combo, is an old dish. In fact, it predates the founding of France!!! And its called French??!! Really!
According to the Apicius, a collection of recipes from the early 5th century AD, the dish we now know as the French toast existed as early as the age of the Roman Empire. In their style of French toast, called Pan Dulcis, Romans would soak bread in milk (and sometimes also egg) mixture, then fry it in oil or butter.
In the 15th century English court of Henry V, a version of the French toast called "pain perdu" or "lost bread" was the culinary rage. Then, it was called "lost" bread because the recipe called for soaking hard or stale bread in a mixture of milk and egg, then frying it. Pain perdu is what the French call French toast today.
So, if the French did not invent the modern French toast, who did? According to legend, it was an Albany, a New York inn keeper by the name of Joseph French. He created the dish in 1724, and advertised it as "French Toast" because he was grammatically inept and forgot the apostrophe.Wow!! That's news!
So all those who have seen our beautiful Kangna Ranaut telling us "French toast" is typical only in India, now know the real thing.

But unfortunately, there was ongoing power cut trouble so couldnot eat it warn enough. Its terribly cold out here and food like this have to be eaten hot.Still Ma and I ate the cold slices. :(

Made Kyra eat her's too, by the way. And she had her egg too. For lunch, again our maid, Mona had made something. So I ventured for dinner, and made "Mutton Seekh Do Pyaza" and it was hot and spicy.
Everyone loved it, but everyone had a runny nose afterwards.. LOL
Mutton Seekh Do Pyaza had Mutton Seekh Kebabs, onions, Capsicum, tomatoes and peas. I stir fried all the veggies after slicing and chopping them, Then added basic Indian spices, salt, chilli powder, chat masala and then tomato sauce. Stir fried some more and then ready. One quick dish!! :P
Thinking of tomorrow. Buffering..buffering...suspenseeeeee
Happy Feasting!

Day1 Crazy Rush (16th January)

Typical scenario at my place...everything happening at one go..Water boiling..eggs boiling..lunch made for my husband..and tea..& I woke up late. Infact I did wake up early, but for my daughter Kyra's milk. But eventually dozed off as it was too early. Then woke up late!!
But I did breakfast and the usual running around my mom in law generally does and today for a change she sat in the terrace and enjoyed the sun. :)
Though I didnt do much of a cooking, but enjoyed thoroughly.
Our maid did a nice job with daal as she was planning for a long time for the dinner and we had some awesome Pujabi style Aloo Paranthas in the afternoon.
& I savoured the sun too and read to my heart's content about the famous Wright brothers. Incredible people and awesome determination.
Sorry, as I could not update that day. But there is going to be more cooking for sure.
Stay tuned.
Happy feasting!!

Kitchen Battle Starts

After 6 years of blissful marriage, I finally take hold of that elusive kitchen. Not that my mom in law and i had a fight...Just because she thought I should be given a chance..A rarity in Indian household!! Surely..Where women's major rights lie in the dominance of kitchen..Though my household also have patches of males dominance sewn here and there, we ladies have still held on to the independence flag in our own way.
Both my mom in laws (My Mom in law and my husband's paternal aunt) have been working ladies and have beautifully managed home and office front awesomely. They are both great cooks..each have their own strengths and both of them coexisted beautifully well in one kitchen.
I came into the picture after their 20-25 years of coexisting. I never wanted to cook. As in cook daily..breakfast lunch dinner.. For me that's monotonous, boring plus kills the fun. And when i got married, I didnt want to interfere in an already well functioning space. I might sound selfish, but believe it or not I did think that. I did the occasional cooking in the evening.
After many years of trying my hand in different areas, I finally gulped down my fear and asked my mom in law to let me do my thing and she relented.(FINALLY!!)
I know a lot of people have doubts in how well this is going to be, including me, so to keep myself motivated, I am keeping a tab on my cooking tryst for an year. I am going to be completely, daringly honest in what happens in my kitchen and what happens to my food and the people who eat it, what they say(including weird remarks and fights over dinner time).
So the 'Epic Kitchen War' starts tomorrow. I am gonna chronicle all my recipes and the journey each day creating them.
Your comments and suggestions will also motivate and help me through. So please dont shy away from that occasional comment or that sarcastic remark. Both will push me.

& believe me or not, I have made a small list of possible recipes I will be trying out. So FOODIES!! Watch out !!
Happy Feasting! :)
